We’d like to introduce a very special cat named Chloe. She is a four year old playful cat that loves getting pet, playing with toys, and has a regressive case of FeLV, or Feline Leukemia Virus which may shorten her lifespan, and we are hoping to find her a loving indoor-only home where she can live out her life. Despite her diagnosis, she is a social and affectionate cat with her humans! Chloe would need to be the only cat in the household, or have feline friends that also have FeLV. Interested adopters should click the inquire button below to learn more and shelter staff will provide additional counseling on FeLV and answer any questions at the time of adoption.
More info on FeLV can be found here: https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951934

Meet Cookie! This sweet, sensitive girl is looking for a quiet and understanding home to call her own. She came to us when her family’s landlord stopped allowing pets, after they raised her from a puppy. Cookie has a history of house training, loves to snuggle up to her people, and easily self-entertains with toys. Once she feels safe, she truly believes she is a lap dog.
Cookie is shy, and can be fearful with new people and in new environments. When uncomfortable, she may try to avoid interaction or communicate that she needs space. She’s looking for a patient adopter who understands dog body language and can read her in these moments, advocate for her needs, and help her feel safe and comfortable as she settles in. Cookie has shown that she is uncomfortable around other dogs, and would prefer to be the only dog in the home. She’ll need an adopter who is committed to avoiding dog-heavy environments and can provide leash walks in quiet areas or access to private, fenced-in spaces. A nice quiet neighborhood will be best for her comfort.
Cookie has a history of living with a cat, and could be successful again with slow, thoughtful introductions. She may do well in a home with kids who can help provide structure and training support as she continues to learn, and who understand to let her approach and interact on her terms. With time, consistency, and positive reinforcement, Cookie will be a deeply loving, affectionate companion. She is searching for a calm home, a predictable routine, and someone who is ready to meet her where she is, and earn her trust one gentle step at a time.
Stop by Northeast Animal Shelter to meet Cookie. We have open adoption hours 7 days a week from 11:30am-5pm - no appointment needed to speak to a staff person regarding available pets.

Meet Gilligan! Their favorite things are sniffy walks, his people, and treats. Gilligan is a sweet and sensitive pup looking for an understanding family who is willing to use positive reinforcement to build confidence. You will fall in love! Gilligan loves to play and is full of energy, and would make a great companion for a hiker, runner, or just an admirer of the great outdoors. Gilligan prefers the company of human friends to canine and feline friends and wants to be your only pet, but would enjoy having dog friends to go on walks with once he settles in to his new home!
Gilligan may start off a little cautious, but give them time and a cozy spot to settle in, and youll see their sweet and loving personality shine!

Please note, in an effort to keep the stress levels reduced for the dogs in our care, our dog kennel areas will not be open to walk through. Interested adopters will work with a matchmaker on staff to determine which dog(s) they are interested in and if we can identify a match, potential adopters will be able to meet those dogs outside of the kennel. Cat and small animal areas will remain open to walk through.

Look at this little sweet pea! Avon is friendly and silly and playful and just all around adorable. Is that not exactly what everyone wants in a puppy? At any moment, this little girl will crawl on your lap, or pounce on a toy, or do a full assault on your shoe laces. Be prepared!
Avon would love to go to a home with a confident dog that can both show her the ropes and also deal with all that a puppy entails. Cats are a possibility, if your cat can handle a silly puppy. And kids who want to play endless games of tug would be perfect. A puppy brings so much love into a household. They also bring some work. First thing will be to puppy proof the house. Avon is such a baby, she will need to learn everything, starting with how to wear a collar and leash. The rewards are worth all the work!
Would you like to meet Avon? Come see her at the MSPCA in Boston on Tuesdays through Sundays from 12PM to 3:00PM.

Are you looking for an energetic pup? Then look no further! Nala is a high energy girl who loves toys and hanging out with her people. Nala would love an active home with an adopter who was excited to help her learn manners and bring out the polite lady we all know she has inside. She has a positive history of living with a cat and could live with kids who can participate in her training. Nala would prefer to be the only dog in the home so she can soak up all of your love and attention!
Meet Bailey! Being 9 years old and shall we say…chonky…you might think he would be a perfect couch potato companion. But Bailey has other ideas in mind! At times sweet and affectionate, he loves spending time around his people, greeting visitors, and being the center of attention. Bailey also has a fresh side though, and is looking for a family who can keep up with his adventerous spirit. An adult only home where his people are excited to engage him in active play time and are savvy at reading cat body language is where this big guy will thrive. Sometimes in his excitement Bailey forgets the difference between toys and hands and has learned in the past that a nip or a swat will get him what he wants (hint, it’s food). We’re not sure how he’d do with other animals but with the right match and a slow transition it’s possible he could have a cat or a dog friend. His age and size also mean he has some things his future adopter should keep an eye on with their veterinarian to make sure he can stay the funloving troublemaker for years to come.
If you have a yen for a big orange boy with some cattitude, Bailey just might be the cat for you. He is hanging out behind the scenes at the Boston Adoption Center so visit and ask for him by name, or email cbourgoin@mspca.org for more info to see if you’re a match.
Stop by our Boston Adoption Center to meet Bailey. We have open adoption hours Tuesday-Sunday from 12pm - 3pm - no appointment needed to speak to a staff person regarding available pets.

Lovebirds can be lovely, cuddly, and curious but can pack a big personality into their small little body. Primarily native to Africa, lovebirds can range in size from about 5 – 6½” and can live up to 12-15 years with proper nutrition and care. These little birds can be a chatty bunch, singing and whistling throughout the day, but most commonly at dusk and dawn. They are not known for mimicking human speech but with patience and plenty of effort can be trained to perform other tricks. We recommend that lovebirds live in pairs or groups whenever possible. Lovebirds tend to thrive in pairs as their name implies.
We recommend a cage that is at least 27”x24” (Width x depth) with a maximum of ½” bar spacing. Cages should include lots of perches, trays for food/water and lots of toys for enrichment. We do not recommend a seed only diet as it can lead to malnutrition and other potential issues, please consult your vet for specific diet recommendations.
The needs of each lovebird are unique and if you have questions about the right type of enclosure for the lovebird you are interested in, please visit us and talk with our volunteers/staff! We are happy to provide guidance and advice.

Meet Ramzi! This boy is the true definition of a gentle giant. Ramzi’s a sensitive soul who doesn’t know his own strength and will try to climb right into your lap. He’s lived most of his life in a pretty small bubble- so new things can be spooky for this guy. while in the shelter, he has been excelling in positive reinforcement training and would be looking to continue his training journey. Once he’s comfortable with his people, he’s a happy guy! His nubby tail will move like lightning and he shimmies with excitement! He is worth the wait!

This guy is ready to go! Help Diego go into his forever home! This rowdy guy is looking for a home that is excited to continue positive reinforcement training to help him grow into the gentleman we all know he can be. We do not know a lot about diego’s history, so he is looking for a patient adopter who can take the time to get to know him! He could potentially live with a playful dog friend, a cat, or older children who can participate in his training.
Stop by our Boston Adoption Center to meet Diego. We have open adoption hours Tuesday-Sunday from 12pm - 3pm - no appointment needed to speak to a staff person regarding available pets.
Meet Bowie! This sweet boy is happy, bouncy, and super wiggly. He has had two previous homes where he was not properly cared for and was brought to the shelter very underweight, so he is looking for a forever home who will keep him healthy and safe. Bowie loves to play and can be full of energy, so he`d make a great companion for a hiker, runner, or someone who`s just an admirer of the great outdoors. Lots of things may make Bowie excited, so he`d do best with adopters that can continue to train with him so that he can learn how to settle and enjoy some quiet time. Any kids in the home should be able to participate in his training plan, and should be unfazed by a bouncy pup and their goofy antics.
This rat is part of a large surrender so we have less individual information about them. The group of females have a good history living with other females, and are social with people. They tolerate handling, but may still benefit from additional socialization, and an adopter that understands it may take them some time to warm up to their new home and the people in it. These rats will need to go home in pairs (or more) or to a home with existing female rats to have as companion.
Rats are nocturnal, highly social and extremely intelligent animals! Due to the highly social nature of rats we prefer to match them with homes with existing rats, or to adopters looking to take home two or more rats. Rats can be food driven (and great foragers!) making them excellent animals to train. We always recommend the use of positive reinforcement training with your animals, and are happy to provide more information on this topic.
We recommend providing a safe indoor enclosure that allows the rat plenty of space to exercise. The minimum cage size should be 2’x2.5’x2’, with good ventilation (no glass enclosures) and must have a solid base. Preferably the shelter includes multiple levels, with appropriate use of linens or paper bedding and lots of rat appropriate toys. Rats should never be housed with other animals, each species should always have its own housing.
The needs of each rat are unique and if you have questions about the right type of enclosure for the rat you are interested in, please visit us and talk with our volunteers/staff! We are happy to provide guidance and advice.

Meet Phoenix! This handsome guy has been waiting patiently at the shelter for his perfect adopter to come along. Phoenix is a little bit on the spicy side of life! Phoenix would do best with an adopter who is not phased by a little pizazz, is willing to learn to read cat body language, and can give him time to adjust to a new home. Phoenix is also worried, and sweet, so were taking it slow as we get to know him and allowing him to build up confidence at his own pace. Say hey to Elvis! This handsome guy is ready for his new home.
Pigeons can be tamed but tend to be more “hands off” birds. They tend to vocalize throughout the day with a “coo”, dissimilar to the screeching or whistling of many other birds. Pigeons can be found around the world, and can live up to 10 years with proper nutrition and care. We recommend that doves live in pairs or groups whenever possible.
We recommend a cage that is at least 32”x23” (Width x depth) with a maximum of ¾” bar spacing. Cages should include lots of flat surfaces to perch on, trays for food/water and lots of toys for enrichment. Unlike many other species of birds, pigeons are unable to climb up cage bars, and tend to move back and forth making a wider cage more appealing to them. Pigeons should be provided with regular opportunities for bathing, and unlike parrots require grit as part of their regular diet to aid in digestion.
The needs of each pigeon are unique and if you have questions about the right type of enclosure for the dove you are interested in, please visit us and talk with our volunteers/staff! We are happy to provide guidance and advice.

Checkout Girl is currently in a foster home, email her foster mom at cbourgoin@mspca.org for more information.
Calling all goths, night owls, third shift workers, tender hearts, black cat aficionados, and feline savvy people: meet Checkout Girl, though she may not be excited to make your acquaintance in return. This lady’s history is a bit of a mystery, but we do know she spent the last few years of her life living in a grocery store where she hid all day and only came out at night to do her Cat Things. Checkout Girl likely has limited socialization around people and has still been keeping vampire hours in her foster home. But she has also shown some twinkles of promise with slow, and gentle interactions. A quiet, adult only home with *very* low expectations and a high cat IQ will be her best chance at success, cat friends encouraged! If you’re willing to give Checkout Girl a chance at moving from the stock room to a living room email her foster mom at cbourgoin@mspca.org to find out more.
