Meet Azul! They have been waiting patiently at the shelter for their perfect adopter to come along. You are welcome to enter our cat rooms during open hours. Staff and volunteers will be happy to assist you!
Azul is a spirit cat, and if you adopt them, you probably wouldn’t even notice they are in your house if it weren’t for the mysterious overnight disappearance of cat food.
We often can’t predict how a spirit cat will be after they settle in – some become comfortable around their family and choose to spend time with them by sharing the same space or allowing some petting, while others continue to prefer to hide when there’s any commotion. Spirit cats generally prefer to spend their time around other cats and make an excellent kitty friend to a cat already in the home. Our staff can help prepare adopters to welcome a spirit cat into a quiet home, but patience and understanding will go a long way with Azul.
Stop by our Cape Cod Adoption Center to meet Azul. We have open adoption hours Tuesday-Sunday from 1pm-4pm - no appointment needed to speak to a staff person regarding available pets.

Due to this she has been undersocialized with other humans, these types of cats will most likely need extra time to adjust to their new home and new family. She will need an experienced cat owner to understand her body language and behavior. If you think you’re a match or would like to learn more about this special girl please come on in today!
Stop by our Boston Adoption Center to meet Stormy. We have open adoption hours Tuesday-Sunday from 12pm - 3pm - no appointment needed to speak to a staff person regarding available pets.

This handsome fella is Ghost, a 7 year old husky who’d love to add a little excitement to your life! Ghost is a big foodie, and loves to go on long, sniffy walks in the world, so he could make a great adventure buddy once he’s had some time to settle in, but he won’t say no to settling down afterwards to take a nap or work on a nice chew stick or frozen kong!
We don’t have a lot of history on Ghost, but know that he wasn’t regularly meeting or interacting with strangers and had a hard time living with other dogs. Ghost will do best with an adopter who’s ready to help him continue his training journey using positive reinforcement methods, and he says no thank you to living with other animals right now!
In order to best set Ghost and his adopters up for success, please note that Ghost is not a same-day adoption.
Ghost has been through a few transitions recently, and may need a gentle start, but once he feels secure, he’ll reward you with endless love and loyalty!
If you think Ghost could be a good match for your home and would like to learn more, stop by our Nevins Farm Adoption Center in Methuen. We have open adoption hours Tuesday – Sunday from 12:00 pm – 4:30 pm with no appointment or application needed.
Please note, in an effort to keep the stress levels reduced for the dogs in our care, our dog kennel areas will not be open to walk through. Interested adopters will work with a matchmaker on staff to determine which dog(s) they are interested in and if we can identify a match, potential adopters will be able to meet those dogs outside of the kennel. Cat and small animal areas will remain open to walk through.
*Please be sure your town regulations allow for roosters on your property before you inquire about adoption!*
Roosters for hire! We have so many good boys hanging out in our bachelor pad waiting for a flock of ladies of their very own. Our roosters are respectful of people and social with other birds –: they are ready to do their job of protecting your hens! Roosters are full of personality and make great additions to any hobby flock!
Meet Cookie! This sweet, sensitive girl is looking for a quiet and understanding home to call her own. She came to us when her family’s landlord stopped allowing pets, after they raised her from a puppy. Cookie has a history of house training, loves to snuggle up to her people, and easily self-entertains with toys. Once she feels safe, she truly believes she is a lap dog.
Cookie is shy, and can be fearful with new people and in new environments. When uncomfortable, she may try to avoid interaction or communicate that she needs space. She’s looking for a patient adopter who understands dog body language and can read her in these moments, advocate for her needs, and help her feel safe and comfortable as she settles in. Cookie has shown that she is uncomfortable around other dogs, and would prefer to be the only dog in the home. She’ll need an adopter who is committed to avoiding dog-heavy environments and can provide leash walks in quiet areas or access to private, fenced-in spaces. A nice quiet neighborhood will be best for her comfort.
Cookie has a history of living with a cat, and could be successful again with slow, thoughtful introductions. She may do well in a home with kids who can help provide structure and training support as she continues to learn, and who understand to let her approach and interact on her terms. With time, consistency, and positive reinforcement, Cookie will be a deeply loving, affectionate companion. She is searching for a calm home, a predictable routine, and someone who is ready to meet her where she is, and earn her trust one gentle step at a time.
Stop by Northeast Animal Shelter to meet Cookie. We have open adoption hours 7 days a week from 11:30am-5pm - no appointment needed to speak to a staff person regarding available pets.

Reba prefers the company of human friends to canine friends and would prefer to be your one and only – at least while she is settling in.

We’d like to introduce a very special cat named Chloe. She is a four year old playful cat that loves getting pet, playing with toys, and has a regressive case of FeLV, or Feline Leukemia Virus which may shorten her lifespan, and we are hoping to find her a loving indoor-only home where she can live out her life. Despite her diagnosis, she is a social and affectionate cat with her humans! Chloe would need to be the only cat in the household, or have feline friends that also have FeLV. Interested adopters should click the inquire button below to learn more and shelter staff will provide additional counseling on FeLV and answer any questions at the time of adoption.
More info on FeLV can be found here: https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951934

This rat is part of a large surrender so we have less individual information about them. The group of females have a good history living with other females, and are social with people. They tolerate handling, but may still benefit from additional socialization, and an adopter that understands it may take them some time to warm up to their new home and the people in it. These rats will need to go home in pairs (or more) or to a home with existing female rats to have as companion.
Rats are nocturnal, highly social and extremely intelligent animals! Due to the highly social nature of rats we prefer to match them with homes with existing rats, or to adopters looking to take home two or more rats. Rats can be food driven (and great foragers!) making them excellent animals to train. We always recommend the use of positive reinforcement training with your animals, and are happy to provide more information on this topic.
We recommend providing a safe indoor enclosure that allows the rat plenty of space to exercise. The minimum cage size should be 2’x2.5’x2’, with good ventilation (no glass enclosures) and must have a solid base. Preferably the shelter includes multiple levels, with appropriate use of linens or paper bedding and lots of rat appropriate toys. Rats should never be housed with other animals, each species should always have its own housing.
The needs of each rat are unique and if you have questions about the right type of enclosure for the rat you are interested in, please visit us and talk with our volunteers/staff! We are happy to provide guidance and advice.

Meet Bowie! This sweet boy is happy, bouncy, and super wiggly. He has had two previous homes where he was not properly cared for and was brought to the shelter very underweight, so he is looking for a forever home who will keep him healthy and safe. Bowie loves to play and can be full of energy, so he`d make a great companion for a hiker, runner, or someone who`s just an admirer of the great outdoors. Lots of things may make Bowie excited, so he`d do best with adopters that can continue to train with him so that he can learn how to settle and enjoy some quiet time. Any kids in the home should be able to participate in his training plan, and should be unfazed by a bouncy pup and their goofy antics.
Our girl Mili is looking for a special home. This low key, older gal is both blind and diabetic. Once she knows you, she is quite a cuddler and is rather nosy as to what you are up to. With all the recent changes in her life, poor Mili can be easily overwhelmed with changes. She is hoping for patient adopters who can both keep her world small and safe, and also help her navigate her new world. Mili has a good history of living with dogs and cats. Due to her recent vision impairment, dog and cat siblings should be on the mellow side. Mili also has a good history of living with children. Mili is a sweet little thing looking for a home of her own. Would you like to meet her?
If you think Mili could be a good match for your home and would like to learn more, stop by our Nevins Farm Adoption Center in Methuen. We have open adoption hours Tuesday – Sunday from 12:00 pm – 4:30 pm with no appointment or application needed.
